As parents, we all do a lot! Picking up kids, bending up and down doing housework, gardening and much much more. With more and more of us seeking advice on the aches and pains that come with getting a little older and we wanted to write a blog with some top tips. Who better to guide us than local osteopath Emily Moss.
Emily Moss studied for 4 years at the Surrey Institute of Osteopathic Medicine in Epsom and is now a registered Osteopath practicing in Petersfield and surrounding areas. We asked Emily for her tops tips for avoiding and treating joint and muscle pain.
#1 – Prevention is better than cure
So many times I’ve heard people say “It was a bit funny for a few days and then it just went”. Ignoring possible symptoms, even if they are intermittent, could lead to long term damage. If diagnosed quickly any problems are more easily treated before it becomes chronic.
#2 – Look after you core
Your core muscles are your inbuilt lower back brace. Keeping them strong will help your posture and support your lower back but beware – exercises like sit ups may not be best if you have ongoing issues.
#3 – Easing sore muscles
It sounds simple but if you are already suffering from sore muscles a hot bath or heat pack can really help to ease them. Both will promote blood flow to an area helping the muscles, and you, to relax.
#4 – Treating inflamed joints, strains and sprains
If you are suffering from any of these a quick and effective remedy is placing an ice pack, wrapped in a towel, on the area for 10 – 15 minutes. This will help reduce inflammation, swelling, ease pain and promote healing.
#5 – Can Osteopathy help?
Osteopathy can be beneficial for things like arthritic pain, neck and/or back ache BUT during our studies we are taught how to assess more than just backs – you might be pleasantly surprised by what Osteopathy could do for you.
